The ukulele arrived in Hawaii with Portuguese immigrants in the 1870s and was thoroughly Hawaiian within a single generation. The good ones are built from koa, which is what's set into this band. The name is usually translated as jumping flea, which is either about what the player's fingers look like or a nickname that stuck to somebody and never came off.
